Call for 2012 Sepas Award Nominations (November 15, 11)

The Sepas Group announces a call for nominations for the second annual award for outstanding contribution to the Iranian Queer Cause.

Sepas Group is formed by a number of Iranian queers who want to show their appreciation to those Iranians who promote queer human rights, culture and art; congratulate and encourage them for their efforts. Sepas Group calls on the international queer, human rights, and sexual rights communities to submit nominations for 2012 Sepas Award.

Purpose of the Award and General Guidelines

The Sepas Award honours an Iranian organization or an Iranian individual whose work has made a significant contribution toward securing the full enjoyment of the human rights of Iranian queer communities. Especially those who have been subjected to discrimination or abuse on the basis of their sexual orientation and gender identity or expression.

The award nominees will be introduced on August 30th 2012 in memory of the birthday of Saviz Shafaei, the first Iranian gay activist. Saviz died in 2000 from cancer. The 2012 Award Winners will be announced on September 24th 2012 at the Official Launch Party of the 10th annual Iranian Queer Voice Celebration.

With the Sepas Award, we seek to publicly recognize the courage and activism of Iranian grassroots groups and individuals working under the most challenging conditions in pursuit of human rights for queers irrespective of sexual orientation and gender identity or expression.

Award Criteria

In reviewing the candidates, the following criteria will be considered:

Demonstrated leadership and a record of outstanding achievements in the field of Activism, Art, and Media.
Distinguished practical work in the field and in difficult circumstances
Potential impact of the award in supporting and strengthening candidates' work in the future
Demonstrated exceptional efforts to raise awareness to controversial matters
To introduce and nominated Iranians

Sepas's Board of Directors will make a final decision regarding the award after consulting with their committees and senior advisor. The Board of Directors typically announces its decision on September 24th of each year.

Nomination Process

Please be sure to answer all questions on the nomination form. Sepas nominations should be submitted online by July 31st 2012 in order to qualify for the 2012 award. Nominations may be made by anyone, including the nominees themselves. Due to limited resources, nominations must be submitted in English.
